O Give Thanks

Please let me know more about this dance! I do not know its choreographer.

This is a waltz-time (three beats per measure) song. This means the Tcherkessias need to change: pause after each time stepping forward or backward onto your right foot.

This song can be done holding hands or not (except for the turn, of course).

Each numbered step takes six beats of music.

  1. (facing inward) Tcherkessia
  2. (facing inward) Tcherkessia
  3. Three-count turn over R shoulder, then step with L foot in front of right, return weight to R foot, and sidestep left with L foot
  4. Step with R foot in front of left, return weight to L foot, sidestep right with R foot, step with L foot in front of right, return weight to R foot, sidestep left with L foot
  5. (facing RLOD) Triple steps ("cha cha steps", meaning the lagging foot advances up to the heal of the lead foot) R-together-R and L-together-L (on the final step start pivoting to face LLOD)
  6. (facing RLOD) Backwards triple step R-together-R and then L-together-L (on the final step pivot to face inward)
  7. Three-count turn over R shoulder, then step with L foot in front of right, return weight to R foot, and sidestep left with L foot
  8. Step with R foot in front of left, return weight to L foot, sidestep right with R foot, step with L foot in front of right, return weight to R foot, sidestep left with L foot

Notice that step #3 and #4, and also #7 and #8, can be summarized as "turn, coupé R, coupé L, coupé R" with the three-count variations of these steps.

I have seen a variation of this dance we've nicknamed "Half Tcherks" where the two Tcherkessias are the repeated item, rather than the turn and coupés:

"Half Tcherks" Variation

  1. (facing inward) Tcherkessia
  2. (facing inward) Tcherkessia
  3. (facing RLOD) Triple steps ("cha cha steps", meaning the lagging foot advances up to the heal of the lead foot) R-together-R and L-together-L (on the final step start pivoting to face LLOD)
  4. (facing RLOD) Backwards triple step R-together-R and then L-together-L (on the final step pivot to face inward)
  5. (facing inward) Tcherkessia
  6. (facing inward) Tcherkessia
