David and Pop-Pop's Europe Trip
London, England

The final cathedral of my vacation was Saint Paul's.

Much unlike Florence's cathedral, the stairs up to the dome were quite modern. I was disappointed.

There was a good view from the dome. Here are two different views of London, from different sides of the dome's balcony.

There was an interesting war memorial in St. Paul's, too.

Diary--July 19th, 1994

I forgot to mention the view from the dome of St.Paul's. While London does not look much like Los Angeles, the two problems of St. Paul's being downtown and taller buildings hiding each other's faces made the view from St. Paul's surprisingly generic-big-city. I could see to the Tower Bridge, Parliment, and Big Ben but they were small and not showy from that distance. The parks were all hidden from view, and St. Paul's itself was not much to see from above. Oh, well. I would bet the scenery would be more of a spectacle at night; I am ever so fond of looking down at a city's lights at night, and the famous buildings of London all are surrounded by flood-lights and would take their proper significance in a night time view.

Up where the smoke is all billered and curled,
Between pavement and stars in the chimney sweep's world,
Where there's 'ardly no day, and 'ardly no night,
There's things 'alf if shadow and 'alfway in light.
On the rooftops of London, oh what a sight!
