Yesterday began with a large breakfast, then a tour of Paris by bus. A local guide showed us around Notre Dame. Perhaps the most learning that happened yesterday was I finally understand what French architecture is. Eighty percent of the buildings in Paris are limestone with black slate tile roofs, and six stories tall. Their decorations are wrought iron fences and blacony railings, and occasional exterior window shutters or drapes. In them I've seen more brickwork accenting windows or the edges of walls. I was looking for houses, the French arcitecture I knew, instead of larger buildings.
