David and Pop-Pop's Europe Trip
Paris, France
Our hotel was very close to the Eiffel Tower.
By now you have probably noticed that some of the pictures, especially this one, have smudges on them. This is because after I got home I developed the pictures and then wrote a caption about each on its back. Then I stacked the pictures. The ink smeared a bit. Sorry.
The Eiffel Tower involved the only time I did something bad during the trip. That evening I decided to go climb it, to see the lights of Paris from up high. Pop-Pop was napping when I left--but I didn't leave a note. He woke up while I was gone, and by the time I got back to the hotel room he was very worried.
I'm at the top of the Eiffel Tower, having just learned "see voo play" means "get off the girders". I tried to ask permission, but the help did not understand "may I sit up there?"
Tonight Pop-Pop and I arrived in Paris. Our hotel is close to the Eiffel Tower. Pop-Pop wanted to take me to the Latin District for shishkababs, so we walked halfway across Paris, ate, and walked back. The food was worth it. Tomorrow, with the tour, I'll go in all the buildings I saw on our walk. Hooray for the Louvre!
Paris has unimpressive French architecture, if you can find it. [Not true, see later on.] (New Orleans has better.) The famous buildings here are Greek or Roman in style, dirtier than in London (no post-coal sandblasting), but again with immaculate black fences with golden spear tips.
But the lights at night! I'm up here on a whim, so I didn't bring my glasses. I finally understand the song:
I believe in the Kingdom ComeThe other event of the day was crossing the channel in a ferry. A two hour cruise [as in cruise boat]. Dining rooms, poker machines, a boat you cannot feel. I wandered the top deck in dense fog, playing the harmonica, and ate lunch. Well, it's windy and I'm in shorts and a T-shirt, so I'm going to say good bye, look around more, and return to the hotel.
