A famous sculptor named Bernini made several of Rome's fountains. The first I saw was at the Spanish Steps.
Diary--July 7th, 1994
Now I'm sitting on the Spanish Steps of Rome, surrounded by young people in groups of ten or twenty relaxing in the shade, singing or with a radio, knotting bracelets or napping. I'll write a bit so my stay atop St. Peter's dome is more finite. Pop-Pop is taking me on a walking tour of Rome, from the Piazza del Popolo and the hills above it down into the city and eventually to St. Peter's.
The steps up from the People's Plaza were bowed, their middle worn down with use or rain. It was odd to realize much of Rome is older than the trees of the countryside around it. For me, a problem is that the historical sights and ruins are scattered fragments, and I know too little about the city to comprehend the whole.
