In April 2014 Smiley had a homework assignment to bring a poem to kindergarten class to share. He asked me to write one that "was about Spring but hard to notice about Spring".
So I wrote a short poem he could read with a little practice, in which each of the four lines subtly alluded to a different season.
The only online image I could find with both dragonfly and dogwood petals was this Vintage DragonFly and Dogwood Handblown Glass Paperweight by Daniel Salazar of Lundberg Studio, available then at Etsy.
A dragonfly's first flight
was to a warm stone wall
then the first dogwood petal to fall
like snow and silk so white.
